About Laetere Sunday – 13th March

During Advent the third Sunday is known as Gaudete Sunday.

‘Gaudete’ means ‘Rejoice’ in Latin and it is a day, during the longer period which is more penitential in nature, that symbolizes the nearness of the promised Messiah.

Tomorrow is the fourth Sunday in Lent, known as Laetere Sunday, and it fulfils a similar anticipatory purpose halfway through this time of spiritual preparation and reassures us of the nearness of the resurrection of Jesus.

It is a day of hope when we are invited to look beyond Calvary to the imminent dawn in the resurrection garden.

The earliest known cultivation of ornamental roses dates from 500BC in Persia, China and Mediterranean countries. Palaeontologists working at Colorado’s Florissant fossil beds claim to have found a rose fossil dating back 40 million years.
