The Snowdrop – 23rd February

Galanthus nivalis

Galanthus translates to the Greek word for ‘milk’, nivalis means “snowlike”.

Snowdrop flowers hold deep meaning. It is seen as a symbol of rebirth, the herald of eternal life and a sign of triumph over adversity.

It is thought that the bulbs were first brought to Britain in the 15th century by Italian monks, who introduced the bulbs into the gardens of monasteries. The churchyards in Bisley, France Lynch and Oakridge all evidence the enthusiasm of the Victorians for planting snowdrops on the graves of loved ones.
