Christmas around the world – The Antipodes Australia and New Zealand

In the southern hemisphere Christmas comes in summertime and, on some Australian beaches, Santa has been known to arrive on a jet ski to the enjoyment of people having their Christmas Day picnic by the sea.

In New Zealand the weather is also warm and many families have a Christmas Day barbecue cooking seafood, meat and vegetables for relatives and friends. Bit different from roast turkey!

There is a tree called the Pohutukawa that has bright red flowers in December and is affectionately known as the Kiwi Christmas tree. It mainly grows in coastal areas and people stand under its shade to sing carols in English and Maori.

Merry Christmas !
