Today is the Winter Solstice

Today is the Shortest day in 2020.

Daylight lasts for just 7 hours 49 minutes and 42 seconds.

We have to wait until June 2021 for the Longest Day when there are 17 hours and 20 minutes of daylight.

Did you know?

‘Solstice’ comes from the Latin word ‘solstitium’ which means sun-stopping.

Because the point on the horizon where the sun appears to rise and set changes, people once thought that the sun stopped and reversed direction twice a year.

That is why they called it the ‘sun-stopping day’ or solstice.
